How Do Bariatricians Treat Obesity?
To ensure the highest standard of medical practice, ASBP has developed Bariatric Practice Guidelines that outline four medical (non-surgical) body fat reduction/weight loss methods:
- dietary modification
- exercise prescription
- behavior modification
- medication (when appropriate)
A weight reduction as small as 5-10% can significantly reduce an individual's health risk. Health insurance companies may cover some or all of a patient's bariatric treatment if they suffer from heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition.
